Blepharitis is characterized by an inflammation of the eyelids causing red, irritated, itchy eyelids and the formation of white dandruff-like scales on eyelashes and eyelids. This eye disorder is a widespread, chronic problem. The cause has been linked to bacteria and results in a skin condition similar to dandruff. This is not contagious, but can be uncomfortable and should be treated quickly. It is uncommon for this disorder to cause any permanent vision loss.

In order to prevent blepharitis, good eyelid hygiene is suggested. This may involve regular cleaning of the areas around the eyelids with frequent face washing and eyelid soaking. If the eyelid condition gets worse over time, it is suggested that you see an eye care professional for treatment options.
